About

The New Democracy Institute is an educational and research “action tank” dedicated to shepherding US democracy and economy into the 21st century. It was established by Steven Hill, cofounder of FairVote and former director of the political reform program at New America. Mr. Hill is the author of seven books on democracy, political economy and reform, including 10 Steps to Repair American Democracy: A More Perfect Union, Fixing Elections: The Failure of America’s Winner Take All Politics, Raw Deal: How the “Uber Economy” and Runaway Capitalism are Screwing American Workers, Reflecting All of Us/Whose Vote Counts (co-authored with Rob Richie from FairVote), and more. Mr. Hill has over two decades of leadership in political reform campaigns, cross-partisan coalition-building, public education and outreach, research and solution-oriented policy formation. Mr. Hill has been a longtime spark plug for the national movements to enact ranked choice voting, proportional representation, public financing of campaigns,  automatic/universal voter registration, portable safety net, Big Tech regulation, Social Security expansion and more. He has mentored and advised reform efforts in numerous states and cities, and has a history of winning campaigns, via both ballot measures and legislative lobbying.
